What is a carambola?

30 Aug

If you’re anything like me, you grew up eating apples, oranges, bananas, and the occasional watermelon. Any other variety of fruit was reserved solely for special occasions.

And even then, the list remained rather bland.

With all of the fancy-pants TV shows that we have nowadays and new grocers like Central Market, we’re being introduced to many new fruits.

The only problem? Most of us don’t know what the hell any of them are.

Like the carambola. What in the fructose is that?

Well, my friends, there IS an app for that.

It’s called Fresh Fruit and it’s available on the iPhone (not sure if it’s out there for other platforms). This handy program tells you what’s in season , tells you what stuff is, and even gives you health info. It’s pretty nifty.

Maybe it’ll give me more guts when I’m in the Asian market. After all, I probably would have tried lychees way sooner had I known what fleshy, tasty little delights had been hiding in that hideous brown shell thing.

Give the Fresh Fruit app a try. It’s free. And then find some ceratonia and let me know what you think.

Don't pop my cornelian cherry.
